Title: The faerie queene. Disposed into twelue books, fashioning XII. Morall vertues.
Repository: Glasgow U Library
Shelfmark: Sp Coll Hunterian Co. 3.28
Published by: John Wolfe
Published for: William Ponsonbie
Published Location: London
Published date: 1590
Copynotes: 1. Condition is only fair. Both the front and back boards are loose (only attached to the text block by the lower sewing thread) and the spine in cracked in two places; some pages are loose (again, only being attached to the text block by the lower thread) although as far as I can see, none have become completely detached. 2. Collation: A-Pp8; 4to. The books ends at Pp8v (p.606): 'Faults escaped in the print' 3. Pagination: [i-ii: ie. t-p and t-p verso with dedication] [1]-606; p.69 unnumbered; p.79 misnumbered as 81; 82-83 misnumbered as 84-85; 86-87 misnumbered as 88-89; 90-91 misnumbered as 92-93; 94 misnumbered as 96; p.184 (with woodcut preceding Book II) unnumbered; p.309 misnumbered as p.319; p.317 misnumbered as p.217; p.388 (blank page preceding book III) unnumbered; p.398 misnumbered as 393; p.430 - 3 printed backwards; p.439 misnumbered as 493; p.510 misnumbered as 600; p.562 misnumbered as 592; p.586 misnumbered as 589; p.590 (blank page preceding letter) unnumbered 3. The copy is annotated throughout in a mixture of brown ink and pencil with underlinings, bracketings of text and other mnemonic type symbols such as crosses; there are no comments to the text, but on the back flyleaf there is a short list of keywords in a seventeenth century hand cross referenced to corresponding pagination (eg. beginning 'Birds, 372, 458); this would appear to be in the same brown ink as many of the underlinings. 4. The book is from the Hunterian collection which was deposited in the library in 1807 (see http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/collection/hunterian.html); we do not have any record of how Hunter acquired the book, but there is also a faint autograph in pencil on the front flyleaf: J. (or possibly I.) Letherland; and a signature in brown ink on the title-page: J. (or I.) Sotheby 4. Main differences between Glasglow copies: p.69 numbered in Sp Coll 171; addition of gathering Qq in Sp Coll 171 (possibly incomplete) with different settings of the dedicatory poems.
Editionnotes: One of three variants of this edition. This one has dedication on title page verso signed "Ed. Spenser"; first digit of imprint date is under the "r" of "for". Quire 2Q is intended to cancel 2P6,7, but the latter are usually retained; pagination above reflects this.
